Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers

TODAY was the first day at my first conference. It has already done what I wanted it to do. What is that? you may ask.
Given me HOPE again. I had almost given up and had I not signed up in January, I would have never gone in June.

I want to ditch my first novel because I see some things wrong. I could fix it, but I get too excited to move on to my next idea because I see all the things I'd do differently.
Some questions to ask yourself if you are writing and write it down!...

1. What is your plot? What happens?

2. What is your story? Who is it about?

3. Tell me about your favorite character in two lines.

4. Why should someone care for your character?

5. What does the character figure out in the end that he didn't know he was going to find out?     (emotional conflict).

6.) What is the concrete conflict?

7.) Does the concrete conflict tie into the emotional conflict?

8.) What happens if the main character doesn't resolve that concrete conflict? What if he doesn't relize his emotional conflict, what happens? (there must me something that happens or the reader is not vested)

Thanks Kris Chandler for a great first day!

I learned that I have too many sub-plots going on in my first book. I think I have so many things to say I thought I'd do it in one novel. Too hard to write and too confusing for readers.

And my daily gem I took from today is.....write down what your story is about in 25 words! or less.
