Kids will listen, but they only reply when they will comply. Kids are honest about their words. If they say they will listen, they will. IF they refuse to say they will do it, they aren't going to do it. When we listen to kids, we teach them to listen. Listening is not complying. Kids can choose to not comply. Should they always comply? Do you allow them to say no? Do you want them to ever say no to you? What will you do when they say no? and you want them to comply? Wait them out. They have more patience than you! When they get older they will argue and they will wait you out. And they are good at it.

Social and Emotional Well-Being of young children is a research study done in 5 European countries. It was completed in 2018 to bring to light the need for emotional regulation help for educators. Legislation needs to be ware of the growing needs. The Mental Health crisis is a world wide epidemic. These factors contribute to the problem: poverty and social inequality; family conflict; bullying and cyberbullying, migration, mobility and changing family and community structures. Children’s long term success at school is influenced as much by social, emotional and self-regulation skills as by academic skills and knowledge. . Ellen Beate is my new super hero that is currently doing studies on risky play and its benefits. She is a Professor at the Department of Physical Education and Health, Queen Maud University College. Her research interests primarily include children's physical active and movement play with emphasis on risky and thrilling play, both in children's and adults' perspective. She particularly emphasizes the importance of children's right to free play, outdoor play and play where children explore their own limits and the boundaries and possibilities in their environment. Western societies make risky play almost impossible with its safety requirements for schools, outdoor spaces are lacking and children do not have adequate time to play. Most of my readings come from her projects.   The Hidden School does not have play equipment because kids need freedom to create. I have rocks to climb on, wood to build with, ladders to climb, sticks are allowed, and dirt encouraged. We search for puddles, which are hard to find. We search for any critters that crawl, slither, fly and hide. These animals and critters help teach empathy which our society says children have less of. Children are taught empathy. Caterpillars and butterflies are here not just for science, but for emotional skills. Ducks and Chickens are here for understanding that they get scared too. Children are learning to take another's perspective and all of these things help them begin this road to understanding others.
