Book recommendations for summer 2024:

  1. The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

  2. The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection by Louisa Thomsen Brits

  3. Disillusioned: Five Families and the Unraveling of America's Suburbs by Benjamin Herold

  4. Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar-Your Brain's Silent Killers by David Perlmutter, MD with Kristin Loberg

The Anxious Generation is a good read if you care about studies on what cell phones are doing to our children.

The author, Jonathan, pushes for change in the schools. Phone Free Schools. I agree full heartedly that schools should be phone free. Kids could get a text during class that their undeveloped brains can't forget or move forward. Or they are distracted by the phones during class? Really? Do kids get distracted?

Second, children loose valuable awkward situations with other human beings, and valuable interactions with children around them. Cell Phone seclude people into their little bubble even more than humans already do naturally. What do I mean? Naturally we do separate into "groups". However, with less interactions with people we don't necessarily understand decreases our tolerance of them. People, humans, children, and adults, all have less tolerance of what is going on in the world as they dive deeper into the black hole of the rectangle attached to their hand.

However, the author recommend social media not be an option until age 16. Now my experience is that kids will find a way. For example, I took my daughters phone and within 2 days a friend had given her a "burner phone". A phone with data and service. She didn't miss a beat on her social apps thanks to this "good" friend.

Not all children are ready for social media and internet at age 16. Yet, some teachers and school encourage kids to have a phone, download an app, or participate in class with your phone. There is one teacher that gives extra credit to kids that put their phones in a pouch during class. This is an awesome incentive.

The Gabb phone is my favorite. Technology is finally catching up with the damage it has done. Phones for children should have been on the tech worlds radar 20 years ago. But all they wanted was to steal time from our children. And they did. Now, after the mental health epidemic, the tech world is seeing the affects of phone apps and unlimited internet on children. Children remain on the back burner of our society goals for the money makers. Our job as parents is to try and protect them.

What if the NFL said, "We are going to donate 10 seats of our Super Bowl proceeds to improve Phone Free Schools for building enhancements or programs. This could be anywhere from 80k- 260k- or just a suite for $330k. But we live in a society ruled by adults that forget where our future is. Remember the children.

Not to mention how much time parents are spending on their phones instead of parenting children.

Get a Gabb, don't let the internet nab your child

Disillusioned is a rather depressing book. It kind of reminded me how our education system needs revamping.

Everything in America and the world has progressed yet we continue to sit kids at a desk to learn for 8 hrs a day. In the 1800's kids went to school 9am-2pm and went around 140 days a year. Now kids go from 8am-3 pm and for around 170 days a year.

Education has stayed afloat for the children by accommodating adults and the economy in society. What is best for the children? longer days? less play time? more education?

Humans do not all have the same mind. With all the studies on brain development, I believe it is time to re-establish what the best learning environment is for kids.

Some kids do well in a desk for 6-7 hrs a day. But some kids do better moving around, using their hands to learn, and need more play time, and less desk time.

Not to mention that we are only herding children through the education system like cows going to the slaughter house. If you haven't seen Temple Grandin the movie, I encourage you to watch it.

The book of Hygge is my favorite. It is also a great gift and quick read.

It describes everything I want in my home but don't have... a fire burning a warm cup of tea. Unrealistic? No. Reality? No. Your hygge may look different but we have to know what we want before we can be happy.

We all know that if we prioritize something in our life it will take place, grow, begin to flourish.

What do you want to improve on this summer? Make time.

The food we eat affects our body. The Book Grain Brain is a great summer read to help encourage you to change your eating habits. Everyday for preschool a child picks two choices from carbohydrates or vegetables. I am going to add a third option, proteins.

Library activity in at Sandy Library

June 22 at 10:15 is going to be a dog manners class for children with special guests, the Guide Dogs puppy raisers with their puppies!

I have guide dog puppies coming to get practice socializing and I hope for children to come and learn more about how to interact with dogs. When is it okay to pet a dog? Should you pet a dog walking by on the sidewalk? How does a dog say, "stop"?

Post Covid dog bites have risen. People went out and got a dog because they were bored. We have to treat them like animals. It is when we forget that a dog bite happens.

#1 rule from Jessica

Never leave a child in a room with a dog, no matter how well behaved you think your dog is.
